From the railway stations
Vienna is well connected to the international rail network. International trains arrive either at Wien Hauptbahnhof or Wien Westbahnhof. From there you can take the underground, buses and/or trams. Train schedule
Wien Hauptbahnhof to Conference Venue
Take underground U1, direction Leopoldau. At stop Karlsplatz change to underground U2, direction Seestadt. At stop Schottentor-Universitaet take the tram 43 or 44 to Spitalgasse. (approximately 20 minutes). Alternatively you can take the tram D, direction Nußdorf. At stop Schottentor take the tram 43 or 44 to Spitalgasse. This route will take you around the Ringstraße (approximately 35 minutes).
Wien Westbahnhof to Conference Venue
Take underground U6, direction Floridsdorf. Get off at stop Alserstraße and take the tram 43 or 44 to Spitalgasse.. (approximately 15 minutes).
Wien Mitte/Landstraße to University of Vienna
Take the underground U4, direction Heiligenstadt. At stop Schottenring change to underground U2, direction Karlsplatz. At stop Schottentor-Universitaet take the tram 43 or 44 to Spitalgasse. (approximately 20 minutes).
From Vienna International Airport
Vienna International Airport is about 20 km from the city centre of Vienna, which can easily be reached by Airport Bus Shuttle, City Airport Train, train (S-Bahn) or taxi. Whether you opt for City-Airport-Train (CAT), ÖBB Railjet, bus or rapid transit railway depends on your destination.
City Airport Train (CAT)
The CAT takes you to Vienna city center (Wien-Mitte/Landstrasse, undergrounds U3 and U4) non-stop in 16 minutes. Trains leave the airport every half hour from 6:09 am to 11:39 pm and the City Air Terminal at Wien Mitte from 5:36 am to 11:06 pm. Several airlines offer check-in services at the City Air Terminal.
Participants who want to go directly to the conference venue from the airport are advised to take the City-Airport-Train (CAT) to Wien Mitte, then take the Metroline U4 to Schottenring (Direction Heiligenstadt) and take the Metro line U2 to Schottentor (Direction Karlsplatz) and finally the tram 43 or 44 to Spitalgasse.
It takes approx. 50 min in total.

At ticket vending machines: Single ticket 12 Euro / Return ticket 19 Euro
On board: € 2 extra charge for each ticket – single ticket € 14, return ticket € 21
Tickets can be purchased at www.cityairporttrain.com, from ticket machines (in green) and from tourist information at the airport.
CAT Schedule
Tickets are only valid for the CAT, not for public transport in Vienna! Combined tickets however are available at the vending machines and online.
Express train S7:
Rapid transit railway line S7 departs from the airport every 30 min (usually every hour at ’18 and ’48) and stops at several Metro stations over the city: St. Marx, Rennweg, Wien Mitte (connection with Metro lines U3 and U4), Praterstern (Metro lines U1 and U2) Handelskai and Floridsdorf (both Metro line U6). The journey from the airport to Wien Mitte takes 25 min, and to Vienna Praterstern about 30 min.
Participants who want to go directly to the conference venue from the airport have two options:
- Take the Express train S7 to Praterstern and then take the Metro line U2 to Schottentor and finally the tram 43 or 44 to Spitalgasse. It takes approx. 50 min in total.
- Option 3: Take the Express train S7 to Praterstern and then take the tram 5 (in front of the train station) to Lazarettgasse. Walk 6 min to the conference venue. It takes approx. 60 min in total.
Tickets:
Adults: 4.20€, the train ticket includes one way transport within the city of Vienna (tram, bus or Metro connections), no extra ticket needed.
Tickets can be purchased at the ÖBB ticket machines or ÖBB ticket counters (in red).
Travelers with the Vienna City Card (red card) or with multi-day tickets of Wiener Linien need only one additional ticket from the airport to the Vienna city limits for the price of 1.80 €.
Railjet
The Railjets of Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) run non-stop twice an hour from Vienna Airport to Vienna Hauptbahnhof (connection Metro U1) in 15 min, or to Meidling station (U6) in about 30 min.
Tickets: the same as the Express train S7
Airport Bus Shuttle (Vienna Airport Lines)
There are regular buses from the airport to
- VAL 1: Vienna Airport – Vienna Hauptbahnhof (connection with Metro U1) – Vienna Westbahnhof (connection to U3, U6) in 40 min from 6.00 am to 12.30 am every 30 min.
- VAL 2: Vienna Airport – Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz (connection to U1, U4) in 22 min at 1.15 am, 1.45 am, 2.45 am, 4.45 am, from 4.45 am to 1.45 am every 30 min.
- VAL 3: Vienna Airport – Donauzentrum (connection to U1) in 39 min from 6.00 am – 9.00 pm every hour.
The bus station is directly in front of the airport arrival hall. Buses leave every 20 to 30 minutes. It takes around 30 minutes to get to Vienna.
Participants who want to go directly to the conference venue from the airport are advised to take the airport bus to Wien Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz. Then take tram 1, direction Stefan-Fadinger-Platz, to Schottentor and finally the tram 43 or 44 to Spitalgasse.
Tickets:
Adults: Single: 8 €, return: 13 € with the Vienna City Card single: 7 €, return: 12 €
Children under 6 years of age travel for free, children and young adults 6-14 years single: 4 €, return: 8 €.
You can buy tickets online at www.viennaairportlines.at, directly from the bus driver (cash payment) or from the ticket machines of Vienna Airport Lines at Vienna Airport or Vienna Westbahnhof station.
Tickets are only valid for the shuttle bus, not for public transport in Vienna!
Taxi
The taxi stand at the airport is in front of the arrival hall. It takes about half an hour to get to the city centre (approx. 35 – 40 Euro).
To go from the city to the airport, either ask your hotel to book an airport taxi or call one of the following taxi companies (all of them offer special fares to the airport): 31300, 40100, 60160, 81400 or 1716.
The limousine companies have booths in the arrivals hall just opposite and to the left of where you emerge. The ride to Vienna costs around 36 € (around 23-30 €, if you book in advance). Search for „airport taxi wien“
Moving around in Vienna
Vienna has an efficient public transportation system. You can easily purchase tickets at the ticket machines in Vienna or online. The 72-h Vienna ticket (EURO 16.50) is an economic way of moving around in Vienna.
For those who plan to do some sightseeing while they are in Vienna, the Vienna Card (EURO 21.90) might be the right choice. It is also valid for 72 hours and entitles you to reduced rates when visiting museums, exhibitions, etc. You can buy the Vienna Card at the airport, in most hotels or order it online.

Travelling by car
It is very restricted in Vienna, in particular in the area of the city centre. You have to use pre-paid tickets called „Parkschein“ (see Picture), which exist in five colours:

• purple = 15 min., free (your only allowed to use this parking ticket once)
• red = ½ hour, 1.05 €
• blue = 1 h, 2.10 €
• green = 1½ h, 3.15 €
• yellow = 2 h, 4.20€
These tickets can be purchased at any newspaper kiosk („Trafik“). Parking with these tickets is limited to a maximum 2 hours. These parking tickets are only available in German.
If you want to park for longer you have to use one of the car parks. The next one is the „WIPARK Votivpark-Garage“ in the Universitätsstrasse (24 hours open, 4.30 € per hour).
The most inexpensive way to park in Vienna would be to use the park & ride stations for 3.60 € per day (you are recommended to be there at 06:00 am to get a parking space). For further Details on parking in Vienna please click on this Link.
